Ravenswood, West Virginia, was named after its founder, Colonel William H. Ravenswood. He established the town in 1837, and it became a popular stop along the Ohio River for steamboats.
During the Civil War, the town was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces at various times. In 1864, Confederate General Albert Jenkins attacked the town and burned several buildings.
In the late 1800s, the town became a center for the oil and gas industry, and it saw significant growth and development. It was also home to many manufacturing plants, including the Ravenswood Aluminum Corporation, which was the largest aluminum production facility in the world at the time.
In 1921, a devastating fire destroyed much of the town, including many of its historic buildings. The town was quickly rebuilt, however, and many of its historic structures have been preserved.
Today, Ravenswood is a small, tight-knit community with a strong sense of history and pride in its heritage. It is home to several parks and recreational areas, including the scenic Ohio Riverfront Park, which offers stunning views of the river and surrounding hills.
